Classification of Different Grades of Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)

PVC resins are categorized based on their K-value, which reflects their molecular weight and degree of polymerization.

K-Value Classifications:

K70-75 (High K-Value Resins):
These resins offer excellent mechanical properties but are more challenging to process. They require higher amounts of plasticizers to achieve the same softness. Popular applications include cable insulation, rigid conveyor belt coatings, industrial flooring, and similar uses.
K65-68 (Medium K-Value Resins):
The most common type, these resins strike a balance between mechanical properties and processability. Less porous grades are used for rigid PVC (UPVC) applications, while more porous grades are better suited for plasticized uses. Due to their high volume and widespread use, this family of PVC resins is the most cost-effective.
K58-60 (Low K-Value Resins):
These resins have lower mechanical properties but are easier to process. They are widely used in applications requiring challenging processes, such as injection molding, blow molding, and transparent packaging films. Their price is higher than medium K-value resins.
K50-55 (Specialty Resins):
These are designed for specific demanding applications, such as battery separators or composite resins used with adhesive resins to reduce costs.

Unique Features of PVC:

PVC contains 56% chlorine, making it one of the few polymers with inherent flame-retardant properties, as chlorine is a strong flame inhibitor.

Four Types of PVC Resins Based on Polymerization Method:

Suspension PVC (S-PVC):
Produced through the polymerization of vinyl chloride monomer droplets suspended in water. After polymerization, the slurry is centrifuged, and the PVC is carefully dried using specialized thermal systems to avoid thermal degradation. Particle sizes range from 50 to 250 microns, allowing for excellent plasticizer absorption.
- Applications:
  - Less porous grades: Rigid PVC (pipes, windows, seals, ducts)
  - Highly porous grades: Applications requiring significant plasticizer absorption (cables, footwear, soft sheets, films).
Emulsion PVC (E-PVC):
Also known as paste resin, it is used almost exclusively for plastisols. Producing paste resin requires significantly more energy and is costlier than suspension PVC. The presence of emulsifiers and catalysts after synthesis reduces its purity compared to suspension or bulk PVC, resulting in poorer electrical properties and lower transparency.
- Applications: Vinyl flooring.
- Processing Requirements: High temperatures (160-180°C) are necessary to incorporate plasticizer during curing.
Bulk Polymerized PVC (B-PVC):
The purest form of PVC resin, as no emulsifiers or suspension agents are used. Primarily used for transparent applications, it has lower K-values and is commonly applied in calendared/extruded transparent films.
PVC Copolymers:
Vinyl chloride can be copolymerized with other monomers, such as vinyl acetate, to produce a range of resins with unique properties.
- Key Example: Polyvinyl acetate (PVAc), widely used in vinyl printing inks and solvent cements due to its excellent solubility.
- Special Application: PVAc can be used for flooring tiles when mixed with fillers like calcium carbonate. Suspension grades are unsuitable for this purpose due to their high melt viscosity, which limits their ability to cover high filler levels.
