What is a seamless pipe?

Pipes can be classified based on various factors. Metal pipes are mainly divided into two categories based on their manufacturing method: welded pipes and seamless pipes. In the production of seamless pipes, there are no weld seams or gaps, and their internal and external surfaces are completely smooth and uniform, whereas welded pipes are made from steel sheets that are formed into pipes and welded at their joints. Seamless pipes were first produced by the German Mannesmann brothers in the year 1886, and in 1890, the first factory for the production of these pipes named Mannesmannröhren-Werke was established.

The main difference between seamless and welded pipes

Steel and metal pipes can have numerous industrial and non-industrial applications, and each of them can have unique features, advantages, disadvantages, and capabilities. Seamless pipes and welded pipes can be used in various situations and projects due to their specific characteristics. These two types of pipes, alongside their numerous similarities, can also have differences. Among the most important differences between seamless and welded pipes are the following:

• Manufacturing method of steel pipes

The most important and fundamental difference between seamless and welded pipes lies in their manufacturing methods. As mentioned, seamless pipes are produced using hot and cold rolling, extrusion, cold drawing, etc. No welding or joining tools are used in the production of these pipes, whereas welded pipes require welding equipment for their production. Welded pipes are essentially produced by hot rolling at high temperatures.

• Appearance and quality of pipes

Another difference between welded and seamless pipes is in their appearance and structure. There are no weld marks or protrusions on the internal and external surfaces of seamless pipes, which gives them a more uniform and elegant appearance. The surface of these pipes is smoothed and polished. These pipes can also have higher quality and can be used in various projects.

• Strength and resistance of pipes

Seamless pipes have no weld lines, protrusions, or indentations on their internal and external surfaces, which allows them to have significantly greater strength and resistance compared to welded pipes, and they can withstand higher internal and external pressures. However, it should be noted that the resistance and strength of metal pipes can be influenced by various factors, including the alloy composition and the type of steel used. If the same steel and alloy are used in the production of both seamless and welded pipes, seamless pipes will certainly have greater strength and resistance.

• Pressure tolerance and crack formation

If similar materials are used in the production of seamless and welded pipes, seamless pipes have higher strength, making them much more robust against internal fluid pressures and external forces. The presence of seams in welded pipes can make them more vulnerable, resulting in lower tolerance against various pressures. In general, welded pipes are more likely to crack and break.

• Dimensions and technical specifications of pipes

One of the most important differences between seamless and welded pipes is their dimensions and technical specifications. Seamless pipes are typically produced and offered with an outer diameter ranging from 1/8 to 26 inches, providing a wide variety in this regard, whereas welded pipes may have less variety in terms of size and dimensions due to their different manufacturing method. Seamless pipes generally have thicker walls, while the uniformity of thickness and dimensional tolerance is better in welded pipes.

• Resistance to environmental conditions and corrosion

Seamless pipes have a completely smooth and uniform surface, which prevents moisture, corrosive materials, etc., from penetrating, giving them higher resistance to environmental conditions, corrosion, rusting, etc., compared to welded pipes. Even if welded pipes are produced with high quality, they will still have pores and open spaces that can lead to corrosion, rusting, etc.

• Price of pipes

Another difference between seamless and welded pipes relates to their price and cost. In fact, various types of seamless pipes and fittings can have higher prices due to their different manufacturing methods, specific alloy compositions, structural characteristics, physical and chemical properties, etc. The manufacturing process of seamless pipes is more complex, they have greater strength, a more attractive appearance, longer lifespan, and more applications, which is why their prices are higher compared to welded pipes.

• Connection capability and execution speed

In terms of connection capability, it can be said that welded pipes have a significant advantage over seamless pipes because these pipes are weldable. Additionally, replacing and repairing welded pipes is easier than seamless pipes, and their installation is also simpler. Seamless pipes, due to their integrated and seamless structure, have lower execution speed and connection capability.

• Temperature tolerance

Temperature tolerance can also be an important difference between seamless and welded pipes. Seamless pipes, due to their uniform and integrated structure, can withstand higher temperatures. The higher the grade of seamless pipes, the greater their ability to withstand temperature.

o In addition to the mentioned points, seamless and welded pipes can also differ in terms of application, weight, thickness, insulation, etc.

Final summary

A seamless pipe is a type of steel pipe that has no weld seams or gaps in its manufacturing process, and its internal and external surfaces are completely smooth and uniform. Among the most important differences between seamless and welded pipes are their manufacturing methods, strength and durability, price, structural appearance, resistance to pressure and stress, dimensions and sizes, installation and repair, etc.
