Physical and Chemical Properties of Benzophenones

As mentioned, benzophenones can absorb and scatter UV rays. They are essentially formaldehyde molecules where hydrogen groups are replaced with phenyl groups. These compounds are insoluble in water and soluble in organic solvents.

Production of Benzophenones

Benzophenones are produced through the oxidation of diphenyl methane. In this process, copper is used as a metal catalyst.

Applications of Benzophenones

Benzophenones have various applications. For example, they are all photostabilizers (compounds that reduce the speed of photochemical degradation reactions). However, some of them have other properties. For instance, benzophenones -۲, -۳, and -۴ are often used in sunscreen creams.

Benzophenones also find applications in industries. For example, these compounds are used in plastics, coatings, adhesive formulations, and in food products as flavor enhancers. Additionally, benzophenones are used in the pharmaceutical industry, for example in the production of sedatives and antihistamines.

Are Benzophenones Safe in the Cosmetics Industry?

In a report published by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel in ۱۹۸۳, it was stated that benzophenones -۱, -۳, -۵, -۹, and also benzophenone-۱۱ are safe for topical use. These results are based on data from animal and clinical experiments and considering the types of cosmetic products and their concentrations mentioned in this article.

Another report from the panel in 1983 stated that benzophenones -۲, -۶, and -۸ are not mutagenic or genotoxic (compounds that damage DNA) and can be used.

The results of the National Toxicology Program (NTP) studies on the carcinogenicity of benzophenones in the oral region have also been inconclusive. Therefore, there is no particular concern about the potential carcinogenicity of benzophenones when used in cosmetic - hygiene products.

Accidental inhalation of benzophenone-۳ and benzophenone-۴ in cosmetic - hygiene products, aerosol hair sprays, pump hair sprays, and pump deodorant sprays was another issue examined by the panel. Only ۹۵ to ۹۹ percent of aerosol product droplets are minimally inhalable and can be absorbed by the respiratory system.
