Physical and Chemical Properties of Benzophenone

As mentioned, benzophenones can absorb and scatter UV rays. They are essentially formaldehyde molecules in which hydrogen groups are replaced by phenyl groups. These compounds are insoluble in water and soluble in organic solvents.

How Benzophenone is Produced

Benzophenones are produced through the oxidation of diphenylmethane. In this process, copper is used as a metal catalyst.

Applications of Benzophenone

Various applications have been stated for benzophenones. For example, all of them are light stabilizers (compounds that reduce the rate of reactions caused by photochemical degradation). However, some of them have other properties. For instance, benzophenone -2, -3 and -4 are often used in sunscreens.

Benzophenones also have applications in industries. For example, these compounds are used in plastics, coatings, and adhesive formulations, and in food products as flavoring agents. Additionally, benzophenones are used in the pharmaceutical industry, for example, in the production of sedatives and antihistamines.

Is the Presence of Benzophenone in the Cosmetics Industry Safe?

In a report published in the year 1983 by the expert panel on safety and health of cosmetic raw materials, it was stated that benzophenones -1, -3, -4, -5, -9 and also benzophenone-11 are safe for topical use. These results are based on information obtained from animal and clinical tests and considering the types of cosmetic products and the concentrations of them mentioned in this article.

In another report from the panel in the year 1983, it was stated that benzophenone -2, -6 and -8 are also not mutagenic and genotoxic (compounds that damage DNA) and can also be used.

The results of the National Toxicology Program (NTP) studies regarding the carcinogenicity of benzophenones in the oral cavity have also been ambiguous. As a result, there is no specific concern about the potential carcinogenicity of benzophenones when used in cosmetic and personal care products.
