Organophosphate Stabilizers:

Application of Thermal Stabilizers in Polymers:

Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC):
PVC requires thermal stabilizers due to its tendency to degrade at high temperatures. Stabilizers prevent the release of hydrochloric acid, which can corrode processing equipment and discolor the product.
Polyethylene (PE):
PE is more resistant to thermal degradation than PVC but can still degrade at high temperatures. Stabilizers extend its service life and prevent discoloration.
Polypropylene (PP):
PP is more resistant than PE but also requires stabilizers to prevent degradation and discoloration.
Polystyrene (PS):
PS needs stabilizers to prevent the release of styrene gas, which can be harmful to health.

Applications of Thermal Stabilizers:

Thermal stabilizers are used in a wide range of applications, including:

Pipes and fittings
Wires and cables
Sheets and films
Molding and extrusion

In PVC, thermal stabilizers prevent decomposition reactions that can occur during processing and usage. These reactions release hydrochloric acid (HCl), causing equipment corrosion and product discoloration. Stabilizers also improve the mechanical and electrical properties of PVC.

The most commonly used thermal stabilizers for PVC are organotin compounds. While effective and affordable, they can be toxic and environmentally harmful. This has led to increasing demand for less toxic alternatives like calcium-based and organophosphate stabilizers.
