Today, with the increase of automation systems in all production and service fields, the use of semiconductor elements in control circuits instead of relays has significantly increased. The main characteristic of these components is to change the sine wave of the electrical supply and convert it into non-sinusoidal but periodic waves.

Mathematical calculations have proven that every periodic wave is composed of a set of sine waves with the fundamental frequency of the wave and its multiples. The wave with the fundamental frequency is called the fundamental wave, and the other waves are called harmonics according to their frequency. For example, the third, fifth harmonics, etc. In other words, in a network with a frequency of 50 hertz, the third harmonic has a frequency of 150, and the fifth harmonic has a frequency of 250 hertz.

Since the impedance of a capacitor is inversely proportional to the wave frequency, it has lower impedance at the harmonics and allows a higher current to pass through it, which causes premature failure of the capacitor; in situations where the resonance frequency of the capacitor with the network approaches the frequency of one of the harmonics, the conditions become much more severe.

To address such a problem, a reactor is used in series with the capacitor. The series combination of a reactor with a capacitor reduces the resonance frequency of the branch to the designed level, and this combination effectively acts as a filter, exhibiting capacitive characteristics at low frequencies and inductive characteristics at high frequencies.

This property prevents the premature failure of the capacitor.
