Refractory mortar and its characteristics

Refractory mortar is a type of mortar used as a binder for laying refractory bricks in various industrial furnaces. In other words, these mortars are used in the arrangement of bricks to create a neutral layer between each type of brick, preventing erosion, slagging, etc. Refractory mortars are divided into two categories: heat-setting mortars (self-setting in heat) and air-setting mortars (self-setting in air).

Technical specifications of ready-to-use refractory mortar

Ready-to-use and air-setting mortars are a combination of ceramic materials with suitable particle size distribution and mineral binders based on water, specially formulated for insulating bricks. Insulating bricks, due to their high porosity, have a high absorption rate, which is why using conventional mortars with them poses numerous challenges. Ready-to-use mortars, due to their unique formulation, provide adequate strength after drying and firing, while increasing workability time. Additionally, these mortars are also used for heavy and dense refractory bricks.

Preparation of refractory mortar

Prior to using the mortar, it is necessary to mix it with a suitable mixer for a few minutes until the mortar reaches a creamy consistency. The concentration of this mortar is formulated for application by troweling. If immersion application is intended, the water percentage should be added to the mixture and mixed again. When mixing the mortar, ensure that the mixer and containers used are completely clean and free of any contamination. It is important to remember to seal the container lid tightly to prevent water evaporation.

Furthermore, in specific cases, a thicker or thinner mortar or a mortar with a specific analysis (such as phosphate mortar, alumina mortar, silica mortar, etc.) may be required.

Points about refractory mortar

The conditions under which mortars operate are often harsh and therefore require carefully adjusted properties. These mortars must be workable and trowelable.

A slow-setting refractory mortar with good performance and excellent water retention can be used for structural connections and trowel finishes, such as surface coatings for walls or repairs within a certain concentration range.

For strong bonds, refractory mortar must be heated sufficiently to create a strong ceramic bond, while its refractory properties must be high enough to resist melting or flowing out of joints at high temperatures.

Difference between refractory cement and refractory mortar

The biggest difference between cement and refractory mortar is that refractory mortar is used for refractory bricks (mixed with water or other liquids). Hydraulic refractory mortar is a combination of cement and specially engineered aggregates, providing unique thermal and temperature properties for use at high temperatures in applications such as chimneys, furnaces, barbecue pits, and pizza ovens.
